The Posture and Bicycling Connection

Many of you know I am an avid bike rider.  My bicycling interest started as a teenager, as a way for me to get places and meet interesting people.  Over the years my life has been enriched tremendously through bicycling – whether riding with friends around Seattle or racing at the velodrome.

Recently I noticed that several friends stopped bike riding.  It wasn’t because they lost interest.  They were putting away their bicycles because riding had become too uncomfortable.  My fellow riders were complaining of neck and back pain, along with occasional arm tingling.  They assumed discomfort came with getting older.  Thankfully, my knowledge as a chiropractor helped them understand differently.

The month of May brings together National Correct Posture Month and American Bicycle Month – two topics I’m passionate about.  I’m combing both topics in a workshop on Tuesday, May 21st at 7:00pm at Align Wellness.  In the workshop I will talk about:

  • the importance of good posture on and off your bike
  • how you can correct your posture to thrive in your bicycling pursuits

Give a call to Align Wellness at 206-548-9450 to reserve seat.  The workshop is free but space is limited.

I hope you can join me at the workshop and for a ride!

Dr. Dirk

Health

Health has to do with best function of all the structures and physical process required for sustained life.

· All cells working optimally
· Internal environment balanced and non-toxic
· Body and mind responding optimally to changes in the immediate environment

Left alone, your body will decay at a faster rate than necessary. The well-tended garden looks and functions great

year round. It requires attention year round, too. The same is true for you. Those that understand and “garden”  their health and fitness following: Structure, Condition, Sustain … Repeat reap the greatest rewards, season in and season out for decades.

What is FITNESS, then?

Fitness has to do with qualities that help you survive on a daily basis. Fitness is both physical and mental. The more fit you are the easier your daily life and the more able you are to survive under hardship.

Physical Fitness includes: Mental Fitness includes:
· Strength
· Muscular Balance
· Endurance
· Emotional Balance
· Psychological Well-being
· Cognitive Function

Hey Seattle! Are you Fit, Healthy, Both or Neither?

Chiropractor in seattleHEALTH AND FITNESS ARE two very different qualities. Unfortunately, when people think of health they think of fitness. When people look at someone who is “height and weight proportional” even “trim” or “buff” and say that person is really healthy, that’s when someone should ask them, “How do you know?”

HEALTHY APPEARING PEOPLE TOO OFTEN develop cancer or other chronic life-sucking diseases. Healthy people don’t have these problems. A person isn’t, with exceptions, healthy one day – and not the next. Cancer takes at least 10 years to become detectable. This means the person has been unhealthy for at least that long no matter how fit and good they look.

Tune-in next time where we’ll give specifics on the difference between Health and Fitness…

Do you suffer needlessly from this syndrome?

The biggest, most life threatening gamble most people make every day is due to a society-wide syndrome. This syndrome robs people of their health through ninja-esque stealth. It causes people to suffer lower energy, poorer performance in all aspects of their lives and unnecessary diseases for way too many days, weeks, months, years and even decades. This syndrome steals creativity and excitement, motivation and gumption, spark and sizzle, passion and pursuit in the most elegant way imaginable; the status quo.

Do you have GES?

Soon to be known throughout your network of friends and acquaintances, its dramatic effects on your health can be slowed, stopped and reversed simply though not necessarily easily.

GES attacks more than your health, yet its effects on your health have the greatest negative impact. The quality of your health; your structure, your sustenance, your conditioning (body and mind) form the basis for all other aspects of your life.

Deciding to rid your health of GES and acting on that decision may be the single most important choice you could make today. It is our passion to help people who wish to do just that.

“What is GES?” you may have asked. GES stands for Good Enough Syndrome. Its slogan is “Moderation in all things.” A syndrome is a group of associated symptoms (physical and mental). The associated symptoms are; unwillingness to give up harmful habits, reluctant to change routines that aren’t improving one’s health, not doing things one knows one should to improve one’s health, not finding out about what one doesn’t know that is critical to their health, and so many more. One telltale sign of having GES is the use of the phrase, “One more won’t hurt me.” Especially when applied to, say, already poor food choices there is certainty that the person who said that has GES.

The best way to treat Good Enough Syndrome is to learn; how and where to have your body’s structure corrected and what to do to support yourself, how to easily provide yourself the right kinds of healthful water and food, and what conditioning your body and mind need.

This is what we do at Align Wellness.

CAUTION: There is danger in the cure and it lies in the direction of preoccupation with being perfect in one’s approach to treating GES. This danger is rather slight, though, because those susceptible to GES are not typically of a mindset to go overboard, becoming anxious and stressed, as they treat this debilitating syndrome.

Farming on Valentine’s not Hunting

Happy Valentine’s Day! Twenty-one years into my marriage (Thank you, Karen!!) and twenty-two years (today) after open-heart surgery, I’m learning ever more about farming; farming relationships and health, that is.

There is quite the emphasis on seek and destroy in our culture. Yet, that doesn’t work so well for the long term. Instead, we should come to understand what elements are necessary in our internal environments, make those available and let innate intelligence take it from there – farming.

What are these elements? They are Structural, Nutritional, Intelligent and Support Elements. They are ALL critical.

Things happen to your structure and my structure that our bodies simply cannot correct on their own. If they could, I believe they would. Fortunately, I have learned how to truly correct many of these things and that makes all the difference for many people.

Nutritionally we must have clean filtered water, ionized and alkaline is the best (think Chanson) and healthy real food – not processed.

Without the Intelligent Element we flounder after the “latest and greatest” or whatever emotional choice we make in the moment (whether it feels emotional or not). With intelligence, we can come to understand the short and long term effects of our choices. Optimal survival would lead us to make choices for the long term benefit – farming.

Valentine’s Day is about love, unconditional regard for others. That love is shown through our Support of each other over time … farming. The more we learn about how to support others the healthier our crop.

My father-in-law once passed to me a quotation that went something like, ‘If one learns to work among potatoes they will grow. If one learns to work among people they will grow, too.’

Happy Valentine’s Day. Keep blooming!

Wolff’s Law … Plus+

Wolff’s Law says that bones remodel based on the stresses they are under. The corollary is that soft tissues also remodel according to the stresses they are under. Taken in our totality, our bodies are very much influenced by our personal internal environment. Change your environment in positive ways for long enough and you will get positive results. Period. This leads to the questions, “What are the important positive changes and why?”

Align Wellness ToT (Tip of The …)

Toes: Bodies crave stability. There are reasons that almost one fourth of your bodies bones are in your feet; small bones, small muscles, lots of dexterity. Putting feet in shoes (at least “regular” shoes) turns feet into hooves. Bodies start breaking down instantly … though it may take a while to feel it and maybe forever to make the connection.

Want proof? Come on in.

Buckminster Fuller Biographer helped by Align Wellness Structural Correction

Steven Sieden, author of the forthcoming “A Fuller View, Buckminster Fuller’s Vision of Hope and Abundance for All” (Divine Arts, April 2012) has been seeing me for two months and he says that he is more comfortable and productive in his work. He is amazed at how much his posture has improved in a very short amount of time and he finds his physical discomfort is no longer in the way of his creativity.
