  • Structure is the physical body and how the parts are physically related to each other in space and whether they are in physical relationships that promotes well-being or damage it. Structure also includes the structure of the mind (how minds work) and encompasses things that support the body to retain normal physical relationships.
  • Condition is what is done with one’s body and one’s mind to improve their function. Condition is the using of the body and mind in specific ways to draw out their potential for optimal function.
  • Sustain is what you feed your body and mind and includes the water you drink and the food that you eat which provide the source material for your well-being.

Going forward, it is best if we use the same definition of health. Let’s use the World Health Organization’s definition, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

First, let me point out what is NOT in that definition. What is not in that definition are the words “pain free.” A person can be healthy (the condition of having health) and have pain. This flies in the face of most people’s idea (the definition they live by anyway) about health which is, “being healthy means I feel good.” If you are healthy and you burn yourself, you will feel pain. Assuming the burn isn’t over so much of your body and so severe that it overwhelms your health, you will remain healthy and your healthy body will be far more able to recover than if you were not healthy to start.

Next, what is not in this definition is that the absence of pain means that you are healthy. Take cancer as one example of the following idea. I have read that it takes 10 (ten) years at a minimum for cancer to show up in a detectable way, even symptomatically. That means that for at least 10 years the person with cancer has not only not felt any symptoms of being sick, their body has had the right kind of conditions for cancer to grow. Being in the condition for cancer to grow is not healthy. Yet, the person would likely consider themselves cancer-free and, barring other issues that bother them, healthy; though they are not.

My last point for this blog has to do with the part of this definition which is not quite accurate. That is the, “and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity,” part of the definition. Certain infirmities are part of life, though different for each person. Having health, being healthy, does not mean that a person and their body does not have to deal with, say, a cold virus. A healthy person will be able to handle that virus just fine. Even if they are initially overwhelmed by it, their immune system will “kick in” and take care of it. That is a healthy reaction. The unhealthy reaction would be when the immune system cannot respond appropriately. Lack of response to a virus (and therefore no symptoms) means a person’s immune system is unhealthy, not working as it should.

Next:     Knowing now that “health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being” where does health come from? Hmm.

Holistic:

relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts”                 ~merriam-webster.com

For health care to be holistic it needs to be “concerned with wholes or with complete systems.” Humans are whole systems. In my last blog I pointed out that exercise and nutrition do not make up holistic health. What, then, does? How do we wrap our minds around taking care of ourselves holistically?

To solve this riddle we need to look at what this body is and what it needs to be whole. First, a body is a physical thing in a physical universe. Your body has a structure to it, a way that everything fits together. To use an analogy, your body is like a car. A car has physical pieces that fit together. Like a car, when your structure is arranged optimally, you work better. A car with misaligned wheels, wears out tires and other parts faster than necessary. A car with pistons that are sloppy doesn’t perform as well as it otherwise would. When the chassis is bent from an accident, everything attached to the car gets shifted and performance goes down, noticeably or not. You are just like that. When your structure is twisted you are impacting every other function in your body, even your brain function. Excellent Structure is essential for excellent health, good structure for good health and bad structure means bad health.

Having a car that is straight, though, isn’t enough. You need to have gas. Gas is the fuel that your car burns. You, too, need “gas.” Your gas is food. Food is what you burn (or store as fat and then, hopefully, burn) to give you energy. As a living system, you also need food to supply all of the building blocks for all of your tissues. Together, the water you drink and the food you eat Sustain you.

Your car also needs to be used to keep functioning well. (It may not need to be used a lot, but it does need to be used and in ways that don’t damage it.) Batteries drain, gas can “gunk up,” tires can lose pressure and so on. Your body needs to be used to keep functioning well. Without movement and good stress on your body, your body loses capacity to function. Using your body in order to improve its function is called Conditioning.

Holistic health, taking care of your body as a whole involves the three major components just mentioned. I refer to these major components as Foundations, and they are; Structure, Condition and Sustain. Each Foundation has a body and mind component. Together they make up holistic health care.

In summary:

  • Structure is the physical body and how the parts are physically related to each other in space and whether they are in physical relationships that promotes well-being or damage it. Structure also includes the structure of the mind (how minds work) and encompasses things that support the body to retain normal physical relationships.
  • Condition is what is done with one’s body and one’s mind to improve their function. Condition is the using of the body and mind in specific ways to draw out their potential for optimal function.
  • Sustain is what you feed your body and mind and includes the water you drink and the food that you eat which provide the source material for your well-being.

Holistic health requires three Foundations; Structure, Condition and Sustain. Together they make up The Triad of Health. In my practice, Align Wellness, we are concerned with all three of these foundations and supporting others to achieve the health they desire.

Holistic:
relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts”                 ~merriam-webster.com

Personal trainers believe in the benefits of exercise and working out. Typically, they may see exercise as primary (more important than other things) even other health related things. After all, if you exercise enough you will burn enough calories so you can eat whatever you want and not gain weight. Right? In the case that a personal trainer does see the importance of other areas of health they will probably suggest eating a healthier diet.

Nutritionists, nutrition consultants and health coaches that focus on eating and naturopaths that focus on nutrition may believe that nutrition is primary. And they probably understand the importance of exercise and recommend that to people as well, though they may stay out of the specifics.

It might be tempting for any of these experts to hold themselves out as holistic health practitioners. They may be holistic trainers and holistic nutrition consultants – looking at exercise as a “complete system” or at nutrition as a “complete system” if they work that way. Please note; this is absolutely not to slight them in any way. We need people who are experts in these fields and who are, ideally, holistic within their areas of concentration.

Holistic health care, though, is different. A truly holistic health care practitioner or coach is to the personal trainer and nutrition expert as an assembly plant manager is to the plant production line. Both roles are critical for the well-being of the organization; human or otherwise.

NEXT:  Exercise and nutrition are, clearly, important for health. What, though, needs to be included in regards to health care that would make it whole? In other words; what are you missing if you focus on exercise and nutrition? Is there something big missing?

Most health challenges will be solved with “Low Tech *;” well envisioned and well implemented.

The right Low Tech approach has the opportunity to be very grounded, predictable and consistent in its results. This grounded approach serves as a Human Body Owner’s Manual. I call this approach Triad Health.

It is holistic and is built upon three foundations. Each of these foundations is necessary for anyone who wants to create lifelong health and fitness. The Triad Foundations are; Structure, Condition and Sustain. Each Foundation pertains to both physical and mental health. Combined, they encompass all aspects of physical well being.

The actions and behaviors that represent optimal performance on this program are each as fundamental as possible. There is no magic beyond the ordinary everyday magic that comes with restoring normal relationships within the human body. To the uninitiated, the magical return of health and well being that come from restoring these relationships can easily be under-appreciated and, perhaps, unbelievable. To those in the field using aspects of this program on a daily basis to help others and to those millions of people who benefit from aspects of this program, the results are astounding.

Here is what makes Triad Health different from all other programs:

1. Every idea presented has the goal of being as basic as possible. This doesn’t mean simple (humans will never be that!) It means that each idea is a “First Step” idea. A First Step idea is one that does not need to be reached by taking other steps before it.

2. This program looks at people’s health from this unique viewpoint:
A. There is a physical body that performs, or houses, all of one’s actions, conscious and not, and the structure (the shape, the posture) of your body literally shapes your health.
B. First Step data has been discovered that shows how bodies break down at the most elemental levels and what needs to be done to correct them. Any distortion of one’s structure will reduce effectiveness and increase unnecessary wear and tear leading to unnecessary injuries and surgeries such as knee replacement, hip replacement and the like.
C. Any exercise, activity or body position can readily be tested to determine if it is doing First Step damage to a body.
D. Your body is the vehicle of your life. You don’t get a replacement. Take good, really good, care of it based on First Step data.

3. Triad Health is truly holistic. For a program to be holistic, it must address each Foundation; Structure, Condition and Sustain and it must address these foundations physically and mentally.

* “Low Tech” for these purposes means simple, without complicated equipment or products.
